Kahikatea 1, 2007 and Kahikatea 6 (stack), 2007 are part of a body of work Karen made while completing a Postgraduate Diploma of Fine Arts at Elam School of Fine Arts. She made multiple trips to the Hauraki Plains and beyond to seek vestiges of kahikatea forest, often requiring permission to venture onto private farmland to take the photographs. Key themes running through this work include the residues of history - present in the land, landscape as primarily marked by absence, and landscape as a history of ecological disruption.
