Pakuranga Hunt, Otuataua (1945), 2009 is a reworking of a photograph originally taken for the NZ Herald which was published on June 18,1945, (photographer unknown). Depicted is an English-style hunt trailing over the Otuataua Stonefields. This is contested land, currently occupied by protestors.
Karen found the hand-coloured photographic print hanging in the house of an elderly woman who grew up, and was still living, in a farmhouse at Otuataua. Karen recalls, “Alisa Blackwell talked to me about growing up in the area, and told me that her farmer father put her in the nearby crater as a child (Pukeiti, Auckland’s smallest volcano). He used it like a playpen to keep her out of mischief while he was busy on the farm.”
